Jitsu Celebrates 10 Years

Written by Jitsu | Apr 22, 2025 1:30:00 PM

Ten years ago, Jitsu set out to transform last-mile logistics. This year, as we celebrate our 10-year anniversary, we look back at our journey—from a scrappy startup to an industry leader redefining how deliveries reach their destinations.

Our Founding Story

Jitsu’s story begins with our founder, Daniel Sokolovsky, whose early exposure to the logistics world sparked a vision for a better way to move goods. Growing up in a family-run courier business in Southern California, he saw firsthand the inefficiencies of traditional delivery models—routes planned manually, operations dependent on paper-based tracking, and processes that struggled to keep up with increasing demand. He knew there had to be a way to leverage technology to do it better.

Daniel pursued his education at the University of California, Berkeley, where he joined the SkyDeck startup incubator. His first venture, an on-demand food delivery marketplace, showed promise but proved difficult to scale profitably. Recognizing a greater opportunity, he pivoted toward a more sustainable model: batched delivery. This shift laid the foundation for what would eventually become Jitsu in 2015.

Building Smarter Logistics

In the early days, Jitsu was a lean, scrappy operation. With a small team and a relentless drive to solve logistics challenges, we quickly proved our value. Unlike many startups that burned through funding before proving their model, we prioritized responsible growth—balancing intentional, disciplined decision-making with innovation.

As Jitsu grew, we cut our teeth tackling the hardest challenge first—delivering high-value, time-sensitive perishables for meal kit clients. We built our business and our proprietary end-to-end software to meet the super high quality standards our meal kit clients required of their last-mile carrier. And we were (and still are) maniacal, methodical, and obsessive about achieving operational excellence.

Jitsu’s early success with meal kits strengthened our ability to deliver precision, speed, real-time tracking, and a seamless recipient experience—values that continue to drive our approach today.

Succeeding under pressure wasn’t just a test of our capabilities; it clarified what made us different. We weren’t just delivering packages. We were building a delivery model that answered needs the industry had long overlooked.

Defining the Jitsu Model

Jitsu was built to challenge the legacy model of last-mile delivery—not by just adhering to the status quo, but by reimagining the system altogether. Where traditional national carriers like UPS and FedEx rely on decades-old infrastructure and opaque processes, we use a software-first, tech-native approach that puts real-time visibility and control into the hands of shippers, drivers, and end recipients. Our technology doesn't just make things more efficient, it transforms the experience entirely.

The legacy delivery model runs on batching—loading up massive trucks with hundreds of packages to grind through long, fixed routes. While batching is scalable, it sacrifices quality, flexibility, and transparency. On the other hand, point-to-point delivery networks like DoorDash solved for visibility and convenience, but at a much higher cost and without the efficiency needed to handle parcel volume at scale. Jitsu blends the best of both worlds: we batch deliveries like the legacy players, but we match drivers, routes, and packages like Uber. With modern software and operational innovation, we’ve created a premium experience that scales and feels like magic.

We also saw an opportunity to break the traditional mold on the operations side too. Rather than a bulky national footprint of warehouses or fleets, our logistics network is nimble. We leverage gig economy drivers, independent contractors, and existing infrastructure for an asset-light approach that enables scalability, flexibility, and margin potential that nationals can’t easily replicate.

The Jitsu difference isn’t just technological or operational; it’s cultural too. Our tech empowers and enables our people—whether it’s dispatchers managing hundreds of stops, drivers handling time-sensitive deliveries, or customer success managers working with our clients—to operate smarter, faster, and with more confidence. It allows us to not just offer better tracking or faster shipping, but true delivery confidence across every stakeholder.

Gaining Momentum

Jitsu’s momentum accelerated with investment backing from Eclipse in 2019. With a mission to rebuild the world’s physical industries, Eclipse recognized Jitsu’s potential to rethink last-mile delivery from the ground up—combining technology and operations in a way legacy players couldn’t.

“At Eclipse, we saw a massive opportunity to transform last-mile logistics—a space that touches nearly every consumer, yet remains frustratingly outdated,” said Eclipse Partner Kaitlyn Glancy. “Jitsu is bringing much-needed innovation to this sector, delivering a tech-first, asset-light platform that reimagines the final leg of delivery for both consumers and businesses.”

“We believe last-mile delivery remains one of the biggest unsolved challenges in logistics, and Jitsu is uniquely positioned to lead the next wave of innovation. We're excited to support them as they continue to scale and reshape the way packages—and expectations—are delivered,” added Glancy.

In 2020, as the pandemic hit the U.S. and demand for home deliveries skyrocketed, Jitsu’s technology and operational agility positioned us to meet the challenge head-on. We adapted, optimized, and grew, all while staying true to our core principles of efficiency, tech innovation, and operational excellence.

As the post-pandemic landscape evolved, so did we. We diversified our clientele and expanded beyond individual high-density regions. Rather than simply solving last-mile challenges for specific markets, we focused on connecting entire regions, enabling seamless delivery solutions at scale and improving the delivery experience for more Americans nationwide.

Where We’re Headed Next

The parcel delivery landscape has changed dramatically in recent years, and there’s still more disruption in store as we look toward the future. With the introduction of new tariffs, the future of USPS in question, and shifting regulations, the logistics industry is undoubtedly in flux.  Fortunately, we intentionally built our network and operations to be efficient and adaptable, and our disciplined approach affords us a real advantage to stay competitive in this evolving landscape.

“Jitsu’s next chapter is all about solving a bigger portion of our clients’ problems,” said Jitsu CEO Adam Bryant. “Our Midwest expansion is just the beginning—we’re focused on connecting key markets, optimizing logistics networks in ways that create new efficiencies for our clients, and adopting the latest tech innovations to continue improving the superior delivery performance we are known for.”

The goal? A smarter, broader, and more adaptable network that allows businesses, retailers, brands, and shippers to move goods seamlessly across multiple regions.

On the tech side of things, we’ve always been at the forefront of last-mile innovation and yet are still only scratching the surface of what’s possible. We’re continuing to advance our ongoing work with artificial intelligence—identifying new opportunities to streamline operations, accelerate development, automate repetitive tasks, build self-healing systems, and make smarter, data-informed decisions. AI has been a key part of our long-term tech roadmap, and it’s already transforming our systems to be more adaptive and intelligent.
